Pest Animal Control

The prolific abundance of pest animals across Australia has been an ever-growing problem since European settlement. Their impacts are extensive and in some cases permanent, for example, foxes and feral cats have played a role in the extinction of 28 of the 30 now completely extinct or near-extinct Australian marsupials. Feral cats consume an estimated 1.5 billion native birds, reptiles, rodents, marsupials, and 1.1 billion invertebrates every year.

You can use the links below to read more about the impacts of some common pest animals in Australia.

As with all pest and weed control, we apply an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, in order to understand the impacts of pests and develop a solution that works for you and your land. Achieving effective control over an area will take time, and requires a number of steps to be taken at the right times of the year. A multifaceted approach works best, working with landowners to minimise the impacts of the pest.

Whilst ferreting or shooting may offer a temporary reduction in populations of rabbits or foxes, they are not considered 'best practice' when used as stand-alone controls. They are labour-intensive and do little to reduce populations over the long term.

Acres Land Management Services applies an evidence-based approach to pest animal control. The services we offer include:

Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes)

  • Monitoring programs - Camera trapping, spotlight counts, lure stations, sand plots.
  • Baiting - Ground baiting, bait stations or Canid Pest Ejectors (CPE) using either Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) or Para-Amino Propiophenone (PAPP).
  • Den fumigation - Carbon Monoxide gas (CO)
  • Harbour destruction - Excavator, hand tools etc.
  • Trapping - Cage trapping or leg-hold trapping.
  • Ground shooting

European Rabbit (Oryctolagus Cuniculus)

  • Monitoring programs - Camera trapping, spotlight counts, warren counts, free-feeding, dung/digging counts, sand plots.
  • Baiting - Trail baiting or bait stations using either Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) or Pindone.
  • Den fumigation - Phosphine gas (PH₃)
  • Harbour destruction - Warren ripping using an excavator, or bulldozer.

We hold a commercial operator's license under the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Act 1992, with specific endorsements for the use of poison baits and fumigants. This means our staff are licensed and trained in the safe and correct application of these products in order to humanely destroy vertebrate pests.

We work with landowners to identify all risks on their property and neighbouring properties prior to commencing any control program. Not all control options we offer will be appropriate or safe for your individual property. We will advise you on the options available to you based on property size, location, risk to off-target species or pets, topography etc.
